I also think he writes women extremely well, which I love because we get some pretty bad (and weird) writing treatment from a lot of male authors.Library Journal named We Sold Our Souls one of the best books of 2018! The Chicago Public Library selected it as one of their best books of 2018! Booklist chose it as one of their top 10 horror novels of 2018! Hendrix understands that part of the human condition. Human beings make jokes and have fun, even during hard times. It makes it much scarier for me to think something bad might happen to them. The characters feel like people who love things, make jokes, and live a life outside of their role as horror protagonists. His blend of humor and horror works for me because the humor intensifies the horror. I liked reading his books in chronological order because of that change. The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires upped the tension again, and Final Girl Support Group felt very meta-horror with much more subtle humor. My Best Friend's Exorcism still featured a lot of comedy but felt much darker and disturbing to me. Horrorstör contains horrific scenes but also a lot of humor. He blends horror and humor very well, but over time the humor in his novels became more and more subtle, I think. I just finished The Final Girl Support Group last night, and previously read The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires, My Best Friend's Exorcism, and Horrorstör (in reverse order of how I listed them).
